DIN-Rail Mounted Electric Solutions

Weidmuller specializes in DIN-Rail mounted electrical and electronic solutions.  There are many different sizes, materials and styles available in DIN mounting rail and understanding all the options can be confusing.

The most common of these is the relatively short “top-hat” , 35mm style made from steel.  This type of rail is available in both slotted and unslotted versions.

The TS 35×7.5 slotted version is P/N 51450 and the unslotted version is P/N 38340.

The most common DIN Rail is mild steel with a corrosion resistant plating.  However, SCS offers DIN mounting rail in other materials such as stainless steel, aluminum and even copper!

Here are some sample cross sections of DIN mounting rail.

This is the most common, low-profile 35mm rail.

This common, TS35x7.5 rail is available from SCS in mild steel, stainless steel and aluminum.

The 35mm wide “top-hat” DIN mounting rail is also available in this deeper profile rail which provides additional structural support.

The deep TS35x15 solid rail is P/N 23640

and the deep slotted rail is P/N 23650.

DIN Rail with other cross sections are available.

This is a “G” shaped mounting rail.

The solid version of this TS32 rail is P/N 12280.

The slotted version of TS32 rail is P/N 51440

There are two types of mounting rail that are rather special.  This first one is a small, 15mm style “top-hat” mounting rail.  This style is used primarily for mounting very small terminal blocks.  It is available in slotted mild steel p/n 11750,

solid mild steel P/N 51420, and

solid aluminum p/n 13470.

The second specialty mounting rail is an extra-heavy duty TS53 rail, p/n 49800.  This can be used for mounting heavy items.

DIN rail comes in standard lengths of 2 meters, or about 6-1/2 feet.  SCS can cut these to your desired length upon request.  Rail cutting equipment is also available for high-demand customers.

Terminal Block & Rail Assembly Marking Systems

Weidmuller and Specialty Control Systems offer a wide variety of marking tags for your terminal block and rail assemblies.  Unfortunately, understanding all of these options can be quite a challenge!  In this video, we will look at the most common terminal block marking solutions.

The most popular solution is the DEK pre-printed marking tag.  Many print configurations are available in 5mm, 6mm, and 6.5mm widths.  A few pre-printed cards are available in 8mm width.  Pre-printed cards are available in both vertical and horizontal orientation.

Vertical orientation means that the DIN mounting rail is installed vertically and Horizontal means that the mounting rail is installed horizontally.  Notice how the printing on the marking tags must change to match the rail orientation.

Generally, the tag width will be chosen to match the width of the terminal block.  For example, a WDU 2.5 is 5 mm thick.  So, a DEK 5, 5mm tag will permit the marking of a sequence of WDU 2.5 blocks in strips.  Similarly, a WDU 4 is 6mm so a DEK 6 would be used.  A marking tag that is too large for the terminal block will hang over the edge.  A tag that is too small may move around and result in a non-uniform appearance.

The two most common configurations for the DEK marking tags is

A card of 50 consecutive numbers (for example 1-50, 51-100, etc)

Or a card containing 5 strips of 10 consecutive numbers (for example 5 strips of 1 thru 10 or 5 strips of 11 through 20, etc)

If standard sequential numbering does not meet your project requirements, SCS can supply custom printed marking tags.

Custom printing is offered on 5mm, 6mm, 6.5mm, and 8mm DEK tags in the Multi-card format.  This format allows the printing of 3 characters in vertical orientation for all sizes, 3 characters in horizontal orientation for 5mm and 6mm sizes, and 4 characters in horizontal orientation for 6.5 and 8mm sizes.

The 5mm and 6mm DEK multi-card format is 200 tags per card, the 6.5mm format is 180 tags per card, and the 8mm format is 160 tags per card.

What if you need more than 3 characters on your marking tags?  Glad you asked!

The WS-Series multi-card marking tags (available in 5mm, 6mm and 6.5mm widths) are larger and provide the addition space needed for your project’s advanced marking requirements.

The smallest tag, the WS 8/5 will accept 5 characters in vertical orientation.  The larger tag, the WS 12/6.5, will accept 7 characters in vertical orientation.  In horizontal orientation, the tags will accept 2 or more lines of 3 characters.

The WS-Series multi-card marking tags are not installed in strips but rather individually.

Weidmuller WMF-Series Terminal Blocks

The Weidmuller WMF-Series Terminal Blocks provide an innovative solution to the digital or discrete output requirements of your control system. How is this accomplished?

  1. All of the Weidmuller WMF-Series Terminal Blocks in this series are 5mm thick. The consistent block thickness provides many options for your cross-connection or jumpering requirements and makes terminal block marking a breeze. This 5mm effective thickness is possible because the fuse holder is located above the body of the terminal block. These fuse blocks accept industry-standard 5x20mm fuses. However, as long as the fuse blocks are separated by one or more non-fuse blocks, they occupy only 5mm of rail space.
  2. Pluggable cross-connections or jumpers can span across fused terminal blocks. This means that you can you can feed numerous fused terminal blocks from a single wire to your power supply. Clipping the jumpers with the Weidmuller P/N 900450 WAW 1 tool, provides you with almost unlimited cross-connection possibilities. Insertion of the Weidmuller pluggable jumpers is fast and requires no special tools.
  3. All of the Weidmuller WMF-Series Terminal Blocks in the Weidmuller WMF-Series are uniform in cross-section profile. This means that wire insertion is simpler and wiring errors are minimized.

The Weidmuller WMF-Series Terminal Blocks are available in the following configurations:

  • Feed-thru
  • Disconnect Block with Integral Ground Connection with or without STB test sockets
  • Hinged-top, fuse block with or without indication
  • And, Hinged-top fuse block with integral ground connection with or without indication.

Additionally, many of these Weidmuller WMF-Series Terminal Blocks are available to accept a plug so that you could interface to these terminals with a custom cable – making for easy connection and removal.

We are pleased to announce that the Weidmuller ferrule and crimper connection is UL certified. The single conductor, wire-end ferrules with insulated plastic collars that are processed by Weidmuller tools are now certified by Underwriters Laboratories (UL), in accordance with UL standard 486A. This new certification will be added to the existing CSA-US, DIN/VDE and VG certifications, allowing greater access to global projects with stringent requirements to standards.

It’s important to note the individual components have not been certified, but rather the connection as a whole. Complying with UL recommendations for ferrule crimping, the Weidmuller ferrules were tested after being crimped to a wire using Weidmuller hand tools and automatic wire processing machines. The Weidmuller ferrule and crimper connection is UL certified in accordance with UL 486A when they are used together.

The Weidmuller ferrules are those with insulated plastic collars for cross-sections ranging from 0.25mm² to 50.0mm² (AWG 26-1), with the exception of 35.0mm² (AWG 2). All three ferrule color codes; the Weidmuller, DIN, and “other” color codes, have passed the UL testing process and are listed in the UL Certifications Directory under file “Weidmuller – E354986”.

The Weidmuller hand tools utilized are the types PZ 4, PZ 6/5, PZ3, PZ 6 Roto, PZ 16 for wire-end ferrules with plastic collars as well as automatic Crimpex series strippers and crimpers as well as the automatic stripper and crimper CA 100.

SCS offers a comprehensive assortment of ferrules with plastic collars (insulated) and also without plastic collars (non-insulated) for nominal cross-sections ranging from 0.14mm² to 50.0mm² (AWG26-0).

WSI 6 Internal Cross-Connection

The WSI 6 Fuse block allows the user to install an internal cross-connection bar to tie multiple blocks together (or put them at the same potential voltage).  This is ideal for situations where a power supply is used to feed multiple devices.  The WSI 6 fused terminal block is available with and without blown fuse indication.

To install the WSI 6 Internal Cross-Connection current bar, first punch out the side window of the terminal block using the WAW 2 Tool, P/N 900451.  Make sure that you do not punch out the panel of last block since this may de-rate the allowable voltage.

Snap all of the WSI 6 Fused Terminal Blocks onto the DIN mounting rail.  Slide the QL cross-connection bar through the blocks you wish to cross connect.  Open the fuse lever of each block and attach the cross-connection, or jumper, bar to each of the WSI 6 current bars using an M3x5 fixing screw P/N 105210

The WSI 6 Internal Cross-Connection jumpering system is now in place and insures a reliable power system and provides a professional appearance.

The internal cross-connection bars are available in 2-pole P/N 19430, 3-pole P/N 19440, 4-pole P/N 19450 (Shown here), and 10-pole P/N 33830.

Weidmuller PLUGSERIES Relays

The Weidmuller PLUGSERIES relay modules provide a compact, rugged, and reliable package that is DIN-Rail mountable. But what most users find truly unusual about the Weidmuller PLUGSERIES relays is that the single-pole versions can handle up to 16 Amps of continuous current in a 15.3mm wide package. The modular system enables conventional relays and LED indicators simply to be plugged in. Pre-assembled relays with 1 or 2 changeover contacts and input voltages from 24V to 230V round of the product range. Plug-in type ZQV 2.5 cross-connectors enable relay multiplexers to be set up quickly thanks to simple side-by-side mounting. Most of these relays include LED indication.

The Weidmuller PLUGSERIES relay module product line is an effective combination of established connection technology joined with the high performance of Weidmüller‘s RCL power relays. The PRS type relay is screw connection and the PRZ is tension clamp technology. The ZQV pluggable cross-connections allow input and output potentials to be bridged quickly and easily. The multi-purpose lever can be used to quickly attach and release the relay modules, for both high- and low-profile components. In addition, device markers can be attached in the labeling channel. Such markers are in MultiCard format and can be printed with the Weidmuller PrintJet PRO.

The PLUGSERIES relay kits are especially convenient to use. The Pluggable relay modules and optos can be easily swapped because they are pin compatible. They include the relay module with status display and the base with ejection lever. The PLUGSERIES relay kits are delivered completely assembled and with completely tested functionality. This saves time during assembly and reduces the number of products required. The body made of Wemid material contains no halogens and has a flammability class of V0 according to UL94.
